The Story

In early 2020, as COVID-19 shuttered restaurant dining rooms across the United States, chef and nonprofit founder Michael Chiarello noticed a troubling double crisis: thousands of skilled culinary workers faced sudden unemployment while local food banks reported record demand for fresh, nutritious meals many traditional food banks could not provide. He launched Cooks Who Feed as a direct response. The initial Napa County pilot paired 12 laid-off line cooks with a senior meal service, delivering 1,200 meals in three weeks.

The first six months exposed critical gaps in the original direct delivery model. Many small community groups lacked commercial kitchen access to store donated prepared meals, and inconsistent grant funding made it hard to guarantee fair stipends for participating cooks. The team pivoted in late 2020, shifting to a training and micro-grant program that provided food safety certifications and $500 startup grants for cooks to prepare meals in their licensed home kitchens for local mutual aid networks.
