The Story

Mailchimp was founded in 2001 by Ben Chestnut and Dan Kurzius as a side project to their web design agency in Atlanta, Georgia. Originally built to help small business clients send email newsletters, the email marketing tool quickly outgrew its origins.

For years it ran as a bootstrapped side business. The founders took no venture capital and reinvested every dollar back into the product. In 2007, they committed to Mailchimp full-time, leaving the web design business behind.

The platform evolved from a simple newsletter tool into a full marketing automation platform, adding features like customer journeys, behavioral targeting, and AI-powered insights. By 2020, Mailchimp was generating roughly $800 million in annual revenue with over 12 million users, entirely organically grown.

In November 2021, Intuit acquired Mailchimp for approximately $12 billion, one of the largest exits ever for a bootstrapped company. Today, operating as Intuit Mailchimp, it remains headquartered in Atlanta and integrated with Intuit's suite of small business tools including QuickBooks and TurboTax.
