Mugsy Bakes

Mugsy Bakes began when two Cleveland moms and healthcare professionals started testing mug cake recipes in their own kitchens and found nothing on the market that matched the convenience and quality they wanted. Co-founders Devon Climer and Nina Dvorak Lawless turned that gap into a brand built around single-serve desserts that are gluten-free, dairy-free, and made without diet-culture messaging.

Instead of positioning the mixes as a restriction, Mugsy Bakes focused on joy and accessibility: quick microwaveable cakes and cookies that still taste indulgent. The founders used their backgrounds in speech and occupational therapy to prioritize inclusive ingredients, mindful packaging, and a brand experience that feels playful rather than punitive. Early growth came through farmers markets, local press, and programs like JumpStart that helped the founders prepare for retail.

By 2024, Mugsy Bakes had expanded its lineup beyond the core mug cake mixes to include cookie sets and celebratory bundles, while moving toward a dedicated allergen-free production facility. Today the company sells directly through its website and grows its retail presence with a women-owned, Cleveland-based team still focused on the original promise: better-for-you desserts that are ready in minutes and made for real life.
