Sweetwater
Sweetwater is the largest online retailer of musical instruments and pro audio equipment in the United States. Founded in 1979 by musician Chuck Surack, the Fort Wayne company grew from a VW bus recording studio into a billion-dollar business built on dedicated sales engineers and a client-first approach that rejects price competition in favor of expert guidance.
The Story
Sweetwater began as a mobile recording studio inside a Volkswagen bus and grew into the largest online retailer of musical instruments and pro audio equipment in the United States. Founded in 1979 by saxophonist Chuck Surack, the company originally served Fort Wayne musicians and traveling bands who needed affordable remote recording.
Surack's deep technical expertise — especially his reverse-engineering of the Kurzweil K250 and custom sound libraries — earned him credibility among professional artists. That credibility became the backbone of the retail operation as the business expanded beyond studio operations.
Unlike typical e-commerce retailers, Sweetwater never competed primarily on price. Instead, it assigned every customer a dedicated sales engineer who understood signal chains and actual playing experience. Those engineers undergo months of training, and the company empowers them to resolve problems without waiting for management approval. That client-first philosophy carried the brand through the dot-com era, outlasted multiple competitors, and eventually attracted a $1.57 billion revenue run rate by 2022.
Today, the company operates a LEED Platinum-certified campus in Fort Wayne with a 480,000-square-foot distribution center, a 44,000-square-foot retail store, Sweetwater Studios, and employee amenities that reflect the same investment in culture made in its customers. While Providence Equity acquired a majority stake in 2021 and Surack moved to chairman, the company remains headquartered in Fort Wayne and continues to grow through its combination of deep product knowledge and relationship-driven service.
