Taskrabbit

In 2008, Leah Busque stood in her Cambridge, Massachusetts kitchen staring at an empty dog food bag, her golden retriever Tucker waiting by the door, and realized there was no easy way to find a local neighbor to run a quick errand for her. That small frustration sparked the idea for Taskrabbit. The team originally named the platform RunMyErrand, but rebranded to Taskrabbit in 2009 to capture the playful, community-focused vibe they wanted for people juggling busy schedules and unexpected to-do list items.

The first few years were a grind, as the team faced the classic two-sided marketplace hurdle: they needed enough taskers to attract users, and enough users to attract taskers. Busque and her small team spent weekends at Boston pop-up events, handing out flyers and offering discounted errand runs to anyone willing to test the platform, often taking on tasks themselves when no other taskers were available. By 2011, they had expanded to San Francisco and New York, but still struggled to turn a profit, as vetting and dispute resolution costs ate into their small transaction fees.
