The Story

Ben Francis grew up in the English Midlands near Birmingham in the 1990s and early 2000s, splitting his time between the local gym and his school's IT lab. His school had a creative suite loaded with Dreamweaver, Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop, and he picked up the software fast. "It was like knowing how to use magic," he later said of the skills he mastered at 18. He didn't set out to build a fitness empire back then; he was just a teen who loved lifting weights and tinkering with tech. The shift hit in the early 2010s, when lifters started filming workouts and posting progress online, turning gym culture into a community you could join from your bedroom.

Ben, then a college dropout delivering pizzas at night and hitting the gym in the afternoons, spotted the gap: there was no uniform for this new, connected group of lifters. He and Lewis Morgan founded Gymshark in June 2012, operating out of a garage with basic screen printing equipment. They didn't have formal experience in apparel, but they knew exactly how lifting clothes should feel, move, and look when you loaded a barbell for a heavy set. They skipped traditional ads entirely, instead reaching out directly to small-time YouTube bodybuilders and powerlifters—real people with modest, trusting audiences, not celebrities with agents.

When those creators started wearing Gymshark gear, the brand didn't just grow, it exploded. The first proof of how far it had come came at the Body Power Conference, where Ben and the team were pulling in £200 to £250 in daily sales before the event. They brought every stitch of stock they had, and sold out completely by the end of the weekend. Exhausted, they collapsed on the floor of their stand, until a worker from a neighboring booth wandered over and asked how they'd pulled it off.

Ben had no answer. "I've got no idea," he told the man. As revenue climbed, Ben didn't pretend to have all the answers. He hired people with more industry experience, built an internal apprenticeship model, and spent hours studying logistics, design, marketing, supply chain and tech until he could step into the CEO role with full confidence. Today, Gymshark pulls in nearly a billion dollars in annual revenue, sells performance-focused activewear for every type of training, and supports a global community of lifters and creators. It all started with a teen in a garage, trying to make clothes for the people who loved the same thing he did.
