Swair Hair
Swair Hair makes textured hair care products. Launched in 2022, the brand creates sulfate-free, moisturizing formulas tested across 3a to 4c hair types to avoid harsh drying ingredients in mainstream lines, and its best-selling curl cream comes in 100% post-consumer recycled plastic packaging.
The Story
In 2018, college junior Mia Carter launched Swair Hair from her dorm room after 18 months of testing 47 different hair extension wefts, following a 6-week scalp rash caused by mass-market synthetic clip-ins that trapped sweat against her natural curls. She noticed most mainstream extension brands prioritized low costs over material safety, using harsh adhesives and low-grade fibers that irritated sensitive scalps, especially for people with textured hair largely ignored by the beauty industry at the time.
Early sales were rocky. The first hand-tied weft batch had inconsistent curl patterns that led to 12 returns in her first month. Carter pivoted to custom curl pattern matching, spending 6 months building a database of 120 unique curl type variations to guarantee each order aligned with the buyer's natural texture. She switched to 100% ethically sourced human hair and plant-based adhesives to eliminate the irritation issues that sparked her original frustration.
The brand's breakthrough came in 2020 when a TikTok video of a 4c-haired customer showing off her first matching Swair extensions went viral, hitting 2.1 million views in 48 hours. Weekly orders spiked from 15 to 320 within three months, forcing Carter to move out of her dorm and hire a three-person team for production and support. She added custom color matching that same year, using a proprietary digital scanning tool to match extension shades to natural hair color with 98% accuracy.
