Bob Taylor's Bio
Bob Taylor (born 1954) is an American luthier and entrepreneur who turned a high school woodshop project into the world's most respected acoustic guitar company. In 1972, as a junior in high school, he built his first guitar in shop class — not because he could afford one, but because he couldn't. That moment of discovery shaped everything that followed. Two years later, at 18, Taylor and his business partner Kurt Listug bought a struggling San Diego-area guitar shop called American Dream from owner Sam Radding, launching what would become Taylor Guitars. The early years were rough. The company nearly folded in 1981 before Taylor and Listug found their footing, lean-manufacturing their way to sustainability. By 2012, Taylor Guitars employed over 700 people in its El Cajon, California factory and had become one of the most recognizable names in acoustic guitar — played by artists from Dave Matthews to Taylor Swift to Neil Young. What set Taylor apart was Taylor himself: a craftsman-president who still reviewed guitar designs on the shop floor. In 2021, Taylor Guitars transitioned to 100% employee ownership, becoming the largest employee-owned guitar manufacturer in the world. Guitar Lessons, his 2011 memoir, tells the full story of guts, gumption, and the hard lessons that built an American classic.
