Ian Murray's Bio

Ian Murray is the co-founder and CEO of Vineyard Vines, the preppy lifestyle brand that transformed a simple necktie into a cultural statement. Launched in 1998 from Martha's Vineyard with his brother Shep, the company began with a shoestring budget and a few thousand ties featuring tiny whales, sailboats, and street signs. What started in a parking lot, selling ties in the pouring rain, has grown into a nationwide brand with over 100 retail locations.

Ian graduated from Lafayette College in 1997 with an English degree and briefly worked on Madison Avenue for a public relations firm. In 1998, tired of desk jobs, he and Shep traded suits for bathing suits, got their wisdom teeth pulled while they still had coverage, and risked everything on a shrinking category: men's ties. They didn't just sell neckties; they sold an escape—the feeling of a New England summer, rough around the edges and full of freedom.

The brand's first flagship store opened in Edgartown, Massachusetts in 2005, shifting from tie seller to lifestyle retailer. Under Ian's continued leadership, Vineyard Vines has remained family-run while scaling into a multi-million dollar enterprise. The Murray brothers' dedication to breast cancer research is personal after they lost their mother to the disease, and philanthropy remains woven into the company's fabric. Ian still leads the company today, guiding a brand that began with 800 ties and a dream into an iconic American label.
